Kepplair Evolution is a French company developing the KEPPLAIR 72, a project to convert an ATR 72 into a multi-role water bomber for forest firefighting and post-disaster response.

The KEPPLAIR 72 is an ATR 72 converted into a multi-role water bomber. It can carry 7,500 L of water or retardant, dropped in under 1.2 seconds thanks to the KEDS, or be reconfigured for cargo (8.5 t) and medical evacuation (2 to 6 patients).

The Kepplair Evolution Delivery System (KEDS) is a next-generation electric drop system, with no hydraulic circuit, developed with the Institut de Mécanique des Fluides de Toulouse (IMFT) and Trotter Controls. It supports continuous-flow drops to lay a retardant line, or a full-load drop in under 1.2 seconds.

The KEPPLAIR 72 has no scooping capability: it reinforces existing Canadair fleets rather than replacing them, particularly for missions where ground refilling remains relevant.

After the 2022 feasibility study and the 2024 fundraising round, development and flight testing continue through 2025-2026, with the first aircraft targeted for entry into service in 2027.

A turboprop such as the ATR 72 offers greater safety, the ability to fly at night and under instrument flight rules (IFR), and the use of the existing airport network — constraints a scooping seaplane cannot overcome.

Yes. Thanks to its multi-role configuration and retained cargo door, the KEPPLAIR 72 stays operational year-round for cargo or medical evacuation missions, outside the fire season.

Entry into service of the first aircraft is targeted for 2027, following the flight tests currently underway in 2025-2026.
